The modern-day online equivalent of phone books are <strong>online business directories <\/strong>(a.k.a. \u2018Citation\u2019 sites.)<\/p>\n<p>Online directories are sites that scrape the Internet looking for businesses\u2019 information \u2013 at a minimum they\u2019ll include a company\u2019s name, address and phone number (NAP) &#8212; to pull into their master database of businesses. Just some examples of online directories include Yelp, Merchant Circle, Citysearch, Google My Business and YP.com.<\/p>\n<p>The main <strong>Search Engine Optimization (SEO) benefits<\/strong> of getting listed on online directories is that quality online directory listings often show up in search engine result pages (SERPs) when a local business is searched for. In the example below I searched for \u2018clarks shoe stores austin tx.\u2019 As you can see, several online business directories showed up in search results:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35487\" src=\"https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/online-directories-in-SERPs.jpg\" alt=\"Online Business Directories: How to Use Citations to Build a Successful Local SEO Strategy\" width=\"676\" height=\"732\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/online-directories-in-SERPs.jpg 676w, https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/online-directories-in-SERPs-277x300.jpg 277w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Often these directories allow business owners to \u201cclaim\u201d their business listing to ensure that the info they gathered about a business is accurate and up to date. (Google LOVES showing accurate information. For instance, if there\u2019s one directory that has a business\u2019 address listed one way and another directory has the address listed slightly different, then the Google bots don\u2019t know which listing is correct \u2013 so it may just ignore both and show a competitor\u2019s information instead.)<\/p>\n<p>You will often hear online business directories referred to as \u2018citations\u2019 or \u2018citation sites.\u2019 \u2018Citations\u2019 are essentially any place where a business\u2019 Name, Address and Phone Number (NAP) information appears on a site \u2013 many of these \u2018citation\u2019 sites <em>are<\/em> online business directories but it could also be a site that happens to list a business\u2019 contact info in a blog post, for example.<\/p>\n<h2>What Are Online Directories and Why Are They Important for Local SEO?<\/h2>\n<p>Online Business Directories are websites that scrape the Internet looking for information about local businesses. Their goal? To gather as much relevant and accurate information as they can about local businesses so they become a reliable source to Google, Bing, Yahoo! and other search engines. Big online directories like Google My Business, Bing Places for Business, Yelp and Citysearch reap the benefits of their hunting and gathering efforts by showing up towards the top on local business searches.<\/p>\n<p>Online directories also allow you to get a backlink to your website from a trustworthy site. In a day when backlinks are <em>still <\/em>important to the search engines as a ranking factor, it lends to your business\u2019 credibility when you\u2019re accurately linked to on the top online directories.<\/p>\n<h2>Your Customers Are Searching for You Online \u2013 Can Your Business Be Found?<\/h2>\n<p>Research shows that 97% of consumers search the web to find local goods, products and services, but according to the Local Search Association, <strong>56% of local businesses still haven\u2019t claimed their Google My Business Page (GMB) <\/strong>&#8212; which is quite possibly <em>the most important online directory to claim<\/em>. And GMB is not the only online directory that businesses are missing: just 33% of businesses have claimed their Yelp listing; 21% on Yahoo and 19% on YP.com. Businesses that aren\u2019t claiming, ensuring their business info is correct and optimizing these often-free listings are missing out\u2026<\/p>\n<p>For instance, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.searchenginejournal.com\/new-study-reveals-top-local-seo-ranking-factors-2016\/166908\/\">Search Engine Journal<\/a>, <strong>signals within a business\u2019 GMB page is among the top search engine ranking factors<\/strong>. These signals include online reviews, pictures and having the page Owner Verified (this means the business owner took the time to verify and\/or correct the information Google had listed about their business.) One of the most popular ranking factors is having a keyword in the Google My Business page\u2019s business name \u2013 which can help you rank at least 1.5 spots higher with just this factor alone.<\/p>\n<p>The popular SEO site, Moz.com has also shown that Google My Business Signals and Citation information, such as a business\u2019 NAP information, also impacts search engine results.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"673\" height=\"560\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35492\" src=\"https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/moz-local-ranking-factors.png\" alt=\"Online Business Directories: How to Use Citations to Build a Successful Local SEO Strategy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The best way to claim your Google My Business page is to go to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.GYBO.com\/business\">www.GYBO.com\/business<\/a> and follow the steps:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-35489\" src=\"https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/GYBO-1024x594.png\" alt=\"Online Business Directories: How to Use Citations to Build a Successful Local SEO Strategy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/GYBO-1024x594.png 1024w, https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/GYBO-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/GYBO-768x446.png 768w, https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/GYBO.png 1797w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2>Not All Online Directories Are Equal<\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s important to note that there are literally THOUSANDS of online business directories out there \u2013 and many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightlocal.com\/2014\/10\/09\/top-citation-sites\/\">niche directories<\/a> as well. Many of the directories out there are (pardon my frankness) crap and getting listed on those directories can <em>actually hurt your rankings<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend that you download Moz\u2019s MozBar so that you can see the <em>quality<\/em> of the directories you\u2019re thinking about getting your business listed on. You have to sign up for a free Moz account in order to see the metrics, but it\u2019s well worth it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"976\" height=\"600\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-35490\" src=\"https:\/\/ducttapemarketing.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/MozBar-Chrome-Extension.jpg\" alt=\"Online Business Directories: How to Use Citations to Build a Successful Local SEO Strategy\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After you install the MozBar Chrome extension you can then easily see some site\/directory quality scores. Home Advisor, for instance, has a Page Authority of 56 and a Domain Authority of 81. These are two FREE business listings you can get from the two largest search engines. Don\u2019t pass these up! The next thing you need to do is search for and verify that your business is listed accurately on the top 150+ online business directories. Vendasta has provided a great (and relatively current) list of their picks for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vendasta.com\/blog\/top-100-online-business-directories\/\">top 100 online business directories<\/a>, but there are other compiled top online business directory lists out there as well that show a variety of other online directories you should check out, too.<\/p>\n<p>Again, if you\u2019re ever in doubt as to whether an online directory is credible or a scam, turn to MozBar and check out their quality data.<\/p>\n<p>If searching for the best online directories, then searching each directory individually to see if your business is listed and then claiming\/optimizing\/fixing your business listings seems like a time consuming and tedious process \u2013 it is! I wish I could tell you there\u2019s a little Online Directory Fairy Godmother who can do all this work for you, but I don\u2019t believe in fairy tales. However, the next best thing IS available: businesses that WILL go out and do all the legwork for you. BrightLocal, Moz Local, Whitespark and others offer citation claiming and listing services. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brightlocal.com\/2016\/11\/02\/moz-local-vs-yext-vs-brightlocal-vs-whitespark\/\">BrightLocal<\/a> recently compared the pros and cons of the top listing citation services, so be sure to check that out.<\/p>\n<p>There are also online data aggregators that have agreements with a large volume of online directories and when you sign up with an aggregator they will \u201cpush\u201d all of your information out to hundreds of online business directories at once. So should you manually claim directories? Use aggregators? Or do a combination of both? Don\u2019t ignore citation sites \u2013 use them to push your business\u2019 info out to the masses.
